One issue with this model of discovery is the issue of "something which is a theory, but has no proof, yet we all know it to be true". In other words, those fools who believe something to be true without evidence and, while I love films and novels about spies, political intrigue and plain old fashioned revenge, those sort of things do not happen as much in real life as the movies would have you believe - or do they?
The current glut of shit[1] on the internet from 'people who want your page counts but have nothing to say'[2] grows unchecked. Fluffy kittens, arguments on "it's not a Vine 'cause it's only 4 secs long", really good advice on "how to fix this or that" from people who know nothing about it to the saps[3], and "Look how funny I am" when clearly they are not[4].
So, people who are bored[5], or ill-informed[6], or uneducated[7], or a bit simple[8], or downright dumbasses[9], have turned to wondrous fountains of knowledge on the internet[10] and in certain magazines (though I suspect these are few in number) for solutions to important questions, and fallen foul of not realising that 96.4%[11] of the info on these sites is original thoughts/speech/documents taken out of context and linked, via imaginary theories and "facts", to events and things which are not really there/not doing what they say/never existed/will never happen/bullshit.
While I could ramble on about stupid factions fighting for their beliefs against others that, quite frankly, no one gives a shit about; instead I give you the "Wallchart of Conspiracy" by Crispian Jago:
Crispian Jago's Wallchart of Conspiracy
All last year: "The end of the earth is 21st December 2012. This is because the Mayans had such wonderful scientific knowledge that they predicted the end of the earth, to the nearest day, from over 1000 years ago (using their great astronomic charts and calculating machines to analyse their knowledge of the composition of the earth after they sent expeditions out to all continents and collected their data on great memory stones?). They knew this and that is why their calendar stopped on that day."
Reality check! The Mayan calendar is split into units including; Tun (300 days), K'atun (20 Tun, appx 18 years), B'ak'tun (20 Katun, appx 400 years), and Piktun (20 Baktun, appx 8000 years).
We are in the 6th Baktun of the first Piktun. The end of the 5th Baktun was 21st Dec 2012.
Why would you design a calendar that had "Piktun" (8,000 years), if you thought the world was going to end in 2012? And, why would you have an "Alautun" = 63,081,429 years? You wouldn't, obviously someone made shit up and got ppl to believe it and then laughed their tits of at the internet simpletons ...
Notes:
[1] Really shit, so shit it makes me want to vomit in their laps[2] Apart from "Here, this is probably true cause of this [made up shit]".
[3] No! Telling someone to "check their settings" or "turn it off and on again" is NOT a FUCKING SOLUTION U RETARD! : A sap is someone who says "Awww, look at the cute kitty", or "when time does X-Factor start?", or "shit, [some stupid actor/actress/rapper/boob-lebrity that did something stupid to themselves] died, it's such a loss to humanity"
[4] Unless it involves pain to themselves in an ironic twist of fate
